Like many villages in the region, Beaumes de Venise has been producing wines since Roman times, but its particularity comes from the production of a natural sweet wine.
Pliny the Elder (23-79) wrote: “Muscat has been cultivated for a long time in Balme and produces a remarkable wine”. Since that time the history of Muscat de Beaumes has never stopped: the muscadière supplied Pope Clement V in Avignon and then the greats of the kingdom, including Henri IV, who tasted Muscat.
A family property for five generations, a bottle of Muscat from 1847 in our possession testifies to the age of the estate.
At Domaine des Bernardins, we started making wine at the beginning of the 19th century. The former property of the Bernardin monks has been transformed into a wine estate. Mr. Louis Castaud was the first to be alarmed by the virtual disappearance of the traditional production of the village and obtained the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise appellation in 1945 after 10 years of work and tenacity.
His family knew how to make the Domaine des Bernardins prosper by combining know-how and tradition. Today his daughter Renée Castaud still participates in the life of the Domaine. Her granddaughter Elisabeth, her husband Andrew Hall and their son Romain produce this wine which is part of the family history.
“For your delight, our wine has matured according to the whims of the seasons. His elegance is personal to him. Its fire, its sap and its bouquet give it love. Suave, it exhales its captivating charm which produces a sweet harmonious impression in the mouth. It then spreads all its roundness into a superb peacock tail. Delicious, her velvet panties glide smoothly down the throat, then enchant the center of us even in a generous and voluptuous caress. It ends well.”
Louis Castaud, founder of the AOC Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, father and grandfather of the current owners.
