Château Maucaillou takes its name from an old expression, a contraction of bad and pebble. It designates the grave Garonne of Guntz, an ice age. If these soils are not favorable to cereals and other crops, for the vine, it is a treat.
The castle, a daring architectural mix halfway between the Renaissance style and the Arcachon villa, was built in 1875. Its geographical location is privileged: between Margaux and Saint Julien, in the town of Moulis, in the heart of the Haut-Medoc . Created in 1875, it could not participate in the 1855 classification of Grands Crus du Médoc, which has remained unchanged since its creation (except for Mouton-Rothschild ).
In 1929 Roger and André Dourthe bought Château Maucaillou and its 2.5 hectares of vines and a few years later created the now flourishing trading company CVBG Roger increased the area of the vineyard to 32 hectares, his son Philippe, figure well known to the Bordeaux wine-growing community, will continue the extension to reach the current 90 hectares.
Today, it is Pascal Dourthe, helped by his sisters Caroline and Magali, who is at the head of the estate to continue the family saga.
Maucaillou Dourthe, Dourthe Maucaillou, the two names are inseparable! For almost a century, the Dourthe family has devoted itself with passion to this renowned property in Moulis, of which they have continued to increase the surface area and improve the technical installations. Today, it is Pascal Dourthe, helped by his sisters Caroline and Magali, who is at the head of the estate to continue the family saga.
