Since 1865 the history of Glenfarclas has been intertwined with that of the Grant family. On June 8, 1865, John Grant became tenant of the Rechlerich farm and purchased the Glenfarclas distillery , founded in 1836.
Today Glenfarclas remains one of Scotland's only fully independent family owned distilleries. The whiskeys of the distillery are recognized by amateurs. They are among the leading whiskeys of Speyside. The philosophy of the Grant family, represented today by the fifth and sixth generation, is to "create pure and perfect Highland Scotch whiskey in the traditional Speyside style". The name Glenfarclas means "the valley of green grass". It is about 1.5 km from the Spey, near the village of Marypark.
Glenfarclas has kept the same type of stills as those in use since 1836, 6 stills among the largest in Speyside. The influence of Sherry is enormous: Glenfarclas does not hesitate when it comes to investing in the best Sherry casks, and today has nearly 68,000 casks, aging in almost 32 different warehouses. These are Spanish Oloroso and Fino Sherry casks , charred in order to deliver all the vanilla flavor and sweeten the whisky. Glenfarclas has vintages from every year from 1952 until today. Each vintage reveals a unique character and aromas, from the freshness of a 10 year old to the sweetness of a 30 year old .
The official launch of the Family Casks in 2008 is a symbol of this: the range includes 43 vintages, from 1952 to 1994, bottled barrel by barrel at natural strength.
In 2016, during its participation in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2016, Glenfarclas was nominated; Best Scottish Single Malt Distillery. 39 experts from the world spirits industry rewarded the Glenfarclas distillery by awarding 6 medals to these different whiskies.
