The jalapeño is the best known and most consumed pepper in the world. Of the species Capsicum annuum, the jalapeño is a moderately pungent variety, with values between 2,500 and 8,000 on the Scoville scale. In Mexico, the jalapeño pepper is also known in some areas as the cuaresmeño pepper.
The origin of its name is in the town of Xalapa, also called Jalapa, in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Spanish and Portuguese explorers introduced them to Europe and Asia in the 15th and 16th centuries.
All peppers are full of vitamins and antioxidants. The green variety of jalapeño has matured less than the red (milder) jalapeño, so levels of capsiacin (the chemical that makes peppers hot) are lower. They are a source of vitamins and antioxidants.
