Where does Breton cake come from?
A strong symbol of culinary culture in Brittany: the combination of sugar and salted butter, the Breton cake is made from simple ingredients. But do you know his story?
It used to be found on tables during religious festivals, such as pardons, or during family reunions in the Lorient region.
But every Breton would tell you that it has always existed. Families pass on their recipes from generation to generation, such as those for pancake batter or far.
However, 1863 is recognized as being a real starting point for the modern history of the Breton cake since there is an official trace of it.
Indeed, it was that year that it was presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris by… A Swiss!
Jean Crucer was a Swiss pastry chef who married a woman from Lorient. He presented his cake under the name of "Lorient cake" and would even have won a prize.
Back in Morbihan, the "Lorient cake" or "Lorient cake" would then have been a real success well beyond the department.
For those who do not know this dessert, it is a crispy, very sweet cake, which is used to dip it in coffee or red wine. Eh yes ! When they brought cakes with them, the sailors dipped them in wine.
