EPIPHANY
This Thursday, January 6, 2022 is the Kings Day and the traditional frangipane galette.
In France, the tradition is to share the galette des rois. It was around the 13th - 14th century that the first traces of cake and sharing during the epiphany appeared. The cake is divided into as many parts as there are people present plus one: the share of the poor.
The tradition of the bean dates back to the same period. For the first time in Besançon, monks began to elect their chapter leader by putting a gold coin in a piece of bread.
The bread was then replaced by a crown of brioche and the gold coin by a bean, more economical.
Today, the tradition is to send the youngest child, supposed to be the most innocent, under the table, so that he chooses “blindly” which guest will be assigned each share.
