Italian Christmas tradition: Panetton
Italian Christmas tradition: Panetton
A little history
Already in the Middle Ages, it was common to prepare richer bread, that is to say made from wheat, for Christmas Eve.
According to tradition, these special breads were eaten by the fireside and a little was kept for the following year as a sign of continuity.
Until 1395, bakeries in Milan were only allowed to bake wheat bread during the Christmas period.
In the 17th century, people were already talking about “Panettoni” made from wheat and garnished with raisins, almonds, butter, eggs and sugar.
