It's amazing that a gangster was behind a win-win law.
He is best known as the greatest American gangster of the 20th century. On the other hand, what we knew little is that this mafia godfather established the DLC in the country of Uncle Sam.
As Prohibition ended in 1929 and the United States was affected by the crisis, Al Capone sought to convert his business. He will take an interest in the milk trade, often thrown away when deliveries are not made on time.
After kidnapping the head of the milk union and demanding a ransom, the one known as "Scarface" will create his own dairy. Quickly, his business becomes profitable. Also known for his help to the poorest (the unemployed and the poor of Chicago), with his participation in the city's soup kitchens, Al Capone will do the same with milk.
He will thus hire the poorest and "force" the dairy industries to offer their milk to the Italian-American parishes.
Only, Al Capone will have wind of expired milk distributed. One of his relatives is also suffering from poisoning due to expired milk. Irritated, the Godfather will order the heads of the milk syndicates to affix a use-by date for each bottle sold in the city.
Double success for Al Capone: he then sells more milk and in 1935, the law on labels and expiry dates is established.
This system first applied in the United States will then be extended to the rest of the world.
