THE MUNSTER: A SACRED MONSTER

With its orange rind and persistent aroma, Munster cheese is instantly recognizable.

Like other monuments of French cheese heritage such as Comté or Roquefort, #Munster has been recognized AOP since 1996.
Munster is an Alsatian and Lorraine cow's milk #cheese whose cradle is located in the Vosges mountains. The origin of Munster dates back to the 7th century, when Benedictine monks settled in this region and began to make cheese for the needs of the community.
The name of the cheese comes from the small town of Munster, located in the Vosges mountains in Alsace (not to be confused with the German city of Münster). Like the town where it was born, Munster cheese owes its name to the Low Latin monasterium, due to the monastery founded there around 660.
Since then, the territory of Lorraine, Alsace but also the territory of Belfort and a small part of Haute-Saône combine their talents to develop and refine all the flavors of Munster.
