The “best cheese in the world” is officially French and it comes from Côte-d’Or
The international jury of the 6th edition of the World Cheese and Dairy Products Festival, which was held in Tours from Sunday September 10 to Tuesday September 12, 2023, awarded the prize for “best cheese in the world” to the Epoisses cheese factory. Berthaut.
A little revenge for this cheese which finished second during the last edition, in 2021.
The international jury made up of 12 members, and chaired by the President of the Rungis International Market Stéphane Layani, had to decide between some 1,600 products from around the world made with at least 50% milk, offered by 200 exhibitors from 48 countries, the all in front of nearly 3,000 visitors.
Devoid of any label, to ensure anonymity and the most total impartiality, the products were scrutinized for their presentation, their cut, their texture, their aromas and of course their taste, by nearly 250 international professionals.
Much more than just a cheese, Epoisses from the Berthaut cheese dairy has a whole experience. “Our story begins with our milk producers and then of course the employees of the cheese factory, who repeat partly ancestral gestures, but gestures learned with the Berthaut family, so it is this whole chain which allows to have the product today,” says Christophe Prouvost, who recalls that in the 1950s, this cheese was “on the verge of extinction” before its rehabilitation by Maison Berthaut.
