French culinary expression: BETWEEN PEAR AND CHEESE
The order of succession of the two dishes in the phrase conforms well to the table mores of the Ancients.
Indeed, from the Middle Ages, after strong roasts and stews, we quenched our thirst with pears (hence the expression "keep a pear for thirst"), highly prized fruits, before moving on to cheese, which marked the conclusion of the meal.
Today, the expression seems to have retained the temporal meaning, but not the modalities that made it a privileged moment. And we now say that we will talk about something "between the pear and the cheese" to simply mean that we will find an opportunity to talk about it, that we will take care of it at one time or another, at a lost moment, the thing not being deemed important enough to be dealt with immediately.
