The tradition of Italian Christmas: Panettone
The tradition of Italian Christmas: Panettone
Ah! An air of celebration before the hour!
Panettone is THE typical dessert of Milanese origin that it is customary to eat during the Christmas holidays in Italy. But we want it in any season!
To put it simply, it could be described as a kind of round brioche with pieces of candied fruit, raisins and citrus fruits.
One of the legends says that Ughetto degli Atellani, a noble horseman from Milan, pretended to be a kitchen boy in order to woo the baker's daughter Toni. For this, he invented a sweet bread garnished with raisins, citrons and orange peel in honor of his dear and tender who was greatly appreciated.
Another legend tells the story of the chefs of the court of Duke Ludovico Sforza who, during the preparation of Christmas Eve, would have burned the dessert. Luckily, Toni, a young Milanese employee in the kitchens, had prepared a sweet bread with the ingredients remaining in the kitchen and would have created the Panettone. Thus the New Year's Eve meal was saved!
Seduction or chance, in any case this is how the "Pane de Toni" (Bread of Toni) or Panettone would have been born.
