The Little History of the Roast.
Have you ever wondered about the origin of this tradition of eating meat on Sundays?
Well, the reason for this ancestral tradition is due to the Christian religion. Since we couldn't eat meat on Fridays, we ate fish instead.
When Sunday rolls around, families get used to indulging themselves by eating meat and dairy products. Sunday noon everything is allowed! This is how the idea of eating meat on Sundays came about.
The roast as we know it was invented before the reign of King Henry VII. The famous royal guards are nicknamed the beef eaters because of their unconditional love for the roast. In the 19th century it was recommended to eat about 3kgs of beef per week (yes yes you read that right per week) which helps to make this meat so popular.
The roast is the darling of Sunday meals in England.
To achieve it in the rules of the art, there is a whole protocol to respect. "The piece of beef must remain at room temperature for one or two hours before being put in the oven", "We start by making incisions in the roast with a knife, to insert slices of garlic, before brushing it entirely with olive oil.
Britain's love of beef, and especially for Sunday lunch, is nothing new, it's such a part of the national identity that 'Rosbifs' is the French's favorite nickname for the Englishman.
