French culinary expression: PUT YOUR FEET IN THE DISH
You can easily imagine him, this clumsy, rude character: not content to wallow in his seat, he puts his feet on the table which, of course, ends up landing in the cooling dish...
It is indeed a rude behavior, which ignores all consideration due to politeness and propriety, that seems to be inspired by this phrase that appeared at the beginning of the 19th century.
It is besides to the latter that the expression is attached "to put the feet in the dish" which would have, no direct relation with the kitchen utensil.
Indeed, the flat would be taken in its first meaning of flat expanse and would evoke, like the "gaffe", the idea of wading, of wiggling the feet in a small expanse of mud.
