"World's 50 Best Restaurants" 2023

Peru's capital - and no doubt its foodie capital - had a terrific performance Tuesday, June 20, 2023 for the World's Best Restaurant awards, claiming the No. 1 title and earning more top 50 spots than any other city. .

Four restaurants in Lima made the list of the 50 best: Central in 1st place, Maido in 6th, Kjolle in 28th and Mayta in 47th. Kjolle is new to the top 50 this year.

Central Restaurant, run by Virgilio Martinez and Pía Léon, has been offering fine dining with Peruvian ingredients and techniques for 15 years. The restaurant “takes diners through 15 different Peruvian ecosystems, categorized by altitude – from 15 meters below the Pacific Ocean to 4,200 meters in the Andes”. Kjolle is Leon's solo business.

Central is the first South American restaurant to win the title of "Best in the World".

The awards - an event considered the Oscars of global gastronomy - were announced on Tuesday evening by the City of Arts and Sciences, a collection of futuristic spaces designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, in the city of Valencia, in the southern Spain.

The host country has done very well at this year's awards with six entries from Spain in the top 50, including the world's 2nd restaurant, Disfrutar in Barcelona. Spain also took 3rd and 4th place with Diverxo in Madrid and Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo in the Basque region.

Italy and France also performed well in Europe, with five restaurants in Italy and four in France in the top 50. In England, London achieved an impressive three places.

In Asia, the city to watch is Bangkok, where two restaurants appeared on the list for the first time, both in the top 20: Le Du at 15th place and Gaggan Anand at 17th.

In the United States, two restaurants in New York were instigated: Atomix rose to 8th place compared to 33rd place last year, winning the prize for the highest climber as well as the best restaurant in North America. Le Bernardin , the long-time favorite, led by chef Éric Ripert, also made the top 50 in 44th place.

This year's top 50 includes restaurants from 24 territories across five continents, with 12 restaurants making the list for the first time.

Restaurants are only allowed to win the top prize in the awards once, after which they are entered into a separate "Best of the Best" program. Members of this elite group include Geranium and Noma in Copenhagen, as well as New York's Eleven Madison Park , The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France. Central will move into the "Best of the Best" category next year.
