The marketing of the famous Mont d'Or will end today, May 10.
But do you know why we don't find them all year round?
Originally from Franche-Comté and more precisely from the department of Doubs (25), this cheese was born at an altitude of 1463 meters in the Mont d'Or massif, located in the Jura mountains.
The origin, and above all the production rate of Mont d'Or, are linked to that of the seasons: the Montbéliard cows produced milk in quantity when they were in the meadows on sunny days, useful in particular for the production of Comté cheese.
On the other hand, once winter arrived and in the warm stables, fed with hay, their milk production dropped. And that was without counting on the snow which once made the roads impassable and the collection of milk impossible.
The farmers of Franche-Comté then decided to make their own cheese during these long winter months: the Mont d'Or was born!
It is for this reason that we do not find mont d'or all year round, manufactured between August 15 and March 15, its marketing can only be done from September 10 to May 10.
