Mymouné: A Lebanese fable
"On the long terrace shaded by a hundred-year-old mulberry tree, Youmna takes in the vertiginous slopes of the valley which descends towards the sea. "This land gives the most beautiful fruits in the world; tough people too, a bit like my sister and I ."
Because audacity and pugnacity were needed for Youmna and Layla Maalouf, both from the small village of Aen el Qabou perched at the foot of the imposing Sannine mountain in the center of Mount Lebanon.
Unaware of village culinary traditions, in 1989 these notable wives took on the challenge of reviving in the Lebanese mountains the thousand-year-old tradition of “Moune” or food reserves intended for the long winter months.
Grandmother's recipes have since been brought back to life and old utensils unearthed. The whole village is mobilized over the seasons around the cauldrons where the various preparations follow one another: in May the water and the syrup of roses, in June comes the turn of the apricots then follow in September the dried figs and finally the pomegranates which we will transform into molasses… And in Aen el Qabou, the village of Mount Lebanon which inspired Amin Maalouf, the two cousins of the writer compose with fruits, jars and a zest of passion, a modern and Lebanese fable.
If the notoriety of the Mymouné range is now recognized (its products are now present on the shelves of the most prestigious delicatessens in New York, Paris or Kuwait City…), it is thanks to the intransigence of Youmna and Leila on the quality of their products: 100% natural containing no additives, food colorings or preservatives. A model to follow in refinement, respect for traditions, sustainable rural development and attachment to the land.
